Flag tournament

Emil Aliev

Head of Development Committee & Press Attaché

The tournament dedicated to “Flag’s day” was organized by the head management of youth and sports of the city Baku in assistance with the rugby federation of Azerbaijan, after some time I’ve finally been able to write an article about this. To start with. About a year ago I received a letter from the representative of the Moscow’s team “ Moscow’s Dragons” from Petr Hutiyev with an offer to schedule a match in November them and our Azerbaijani rugby team. I offered him to schedule the match on “Flag’s Day”. We came to an agreement to do that. In September we have already stated to get ready for the upcoming tournament. We spent time looking for sponsors and finding new solutions. In October another team called “Devebi” from Tbilisi confirmed that they will take part in the tournament.

The precise location for the tournament was the stadium known as “Azerbaijan’s academy of sports and physical education”. At the opening of the tournament the vice chairman of MMYSCB (main management of youth and sport in the city of Baku) Rashad Aliyev welcomed the participant of the tournament and wished the best of luck. Also the participants were welcomed by the president of “Maccabi-Azerbaijan” Ihiilov S.B. The participants pointed out that the governed pays enough attention to the development of sports and the upbringing of the youth. Also the head of “KCA” Deutag Duncan Barton, the team captain Petr Huteyev and Irakli Hundadze as well as the manager of development Emil Aliyev all gave a warm welcoming speech. There was a moment of silence for the deceased ex coach of Azerbaijani team and “Devebi” team Guram Modebadze who spent most of his life training the sportsmen of these two teams.

The first match was between “Neftchi” and the “Moscow’s Dragons”. It wasn’t surprising that the latter dominated the game if we considered the lack of stability and the circumstances that our team had to face. But at the second half of the match our team scored and the score was even, but the Moscow Dragons ended up victorious. The score was 16-7 in favor of the victorious team. The elders stepped down to the playing ground and were joined by the youth who represented “ Palang” and “ TISA TITANS”. Azerbaijani sportsmen lost to their counterparts due to lack of experience with a score of 15-20.

On the evening of the first day the participants gathered at one of the best pubs in Baku-“Tortuga”. There was Azerbaijani music as well as Russian, Georgian and other foreign music. The Dragons spend their ‘occasion’ by drinking tequila since it was a tradition for when the team both lost and won, and I was more than lucky to not only be a spectator of the event but also a participant in the Dragon’s tradition. It seemed by far normal lemon salt and tequila. But if it these items were to be used right then the salt would be stuffed into the team members noses the lemon would be squeezed into the eyes and each member would have to drink up tequila after the torture. The Dragon team thanked the committed members of the crew in their Dragon-y fashion for the great organization and hospitality that they received during the tournament- It was a great pleasure for me to participate in their tradition and there was a moment when I felt like my head would explode from all of the excitement. I really enjoyed the time I spent for them and for that I sincerely thank them. The game between the Dragons and the “Devils” (Devebi) was very intense and on high speeds. The Moscow players were stronger physically but the Georgians were faster in their attacks. The score in the first half of the game was 14-0 in favor for the Georgians. But during the second half time there was radical a change. The Dragon’s changed their tactics meanwhile their opponents relaxed giving them a chance to score. Only due to some specific circumstances did the Georgians ended up victorious with a score of 14-12 in their favor.

The match between “Neftchi” and” Devebi” was just as intense but the Georgian rugby players were too strong and final score was 21-17. The organization committee of the tournament in the world and the team captains were proposed to participate in a world tournament- a mix of the Azerbaijani and Georgian teams as one against Moscow’s Dragons. The proposal of the Russian team was accepted by everyone. The match was very interesting. The victorious team was only indentified on the last minute of the match. With a score of 12-10 in favor of the Russian team the Caucasians got the right to a appeal for a free kick. The captain of the Azerbaijani team Ragif Gyseynli took on the responsibility to kick the ball. The kick as the match itself was very intense and ended the game with a bang. The final was 13-12.

At the final outcome the first place taken by “Devebi” followed up in second place by “ Moscow’s Dragons” and then the third place taken by “ Neftchi”.

The victorious team received a cup and the other teams received diplomas and other memorable prizes. That is how the official part of the tournament ended. On the same evening the teams gathered for the traditional “third half time”.

The precise of location for the “third time” was a restaurant called “Beirut” in the center of the city. The host Elina hanum did everything in order for our guests to enjoy the evening in a comfortable atmosphere. I on the other hand was very proud of our city and the hospitality of our people.

We- sportsmen are not politics. But we are the ones who actually bring the people together. The Russians came in costumes due to the Eurovision that took place in Baku. There were representatives of Georgia who were of African ethnic. It was nice to see how the Georgians and Russians had such a great time spent together raising toasts for the future of our nations. At some point they started singing and the Georgians decided to sing our folk song about a chick called “Jib jib jujalarim” that everyone sang along. The Devebi team brought up a very pleasant present. All of the rugby fans are aware of the “Bledisloe cup” that the teams of New Zeeland and Australia always try to win from each other. From now on every match between Neftchi and Devebi will be carried out in the memory of dear Guram Modebadze and the victorious team will receive a memorable print of Guram. Never mind the fact that the Georgians won the tournament the trophy was given to the Azerbaijani team.

What happened next was something that never happened on the streets of Baku. When accompanying the Georgians the Russians decided to perform a New Zeeland song to which the Georgians replied to with a fiery dance. It was hard to part way for all of us but then again life goes on. Later on the Russians carried a Dragon-y meeting.

In the morning after the traditional bathing time at “ Teze Bay-2” the Russians went to the airport for departure. That is how the third and first by intensity tournament devoted to “Flag’s Day” ended.

We will be happy to see you again in our country that is very hospitable towards our guests.
