On December 23rd was held a press conference devoted to the activity of Azerbaijan Rugby Union in the current year. A video about the performances of our teams in the juniors and adults groups in 2011 was shown at the event. The Head of Development department and spokesman Emil Aliev told about the care and attention, manifested in our country on spots development, informed about the successes won in the field of rugby this year. It was reported that in 2011 our athletes have participated in several international tournaments and were held the tournament dedicated to the memory of Heydar Aliev, attended by local and foreign teams.

Speaking about Azerbaijani rugby players in foreign clubs, Emil Aliev praised the work of our athletes. It was also noted that members of our team Eldar Nasrullaev , Renard Aliyev and Ali Alakbarov defend the honor of the Moscow rugby club “Spartak”. Performances of our rugby players in Russia league will be for them a kind of useful experience.

The Head of General Directorate of Youth and Sports of Baku city Gunduz Valiyev spoke about the successes of Azerbaijani sportsmen, mentioned that our country is the misters of the most prestigious tournaments. It was noted as well that in 2009, with the support of the Main Directorate of Youth and Sports of Baku city host rugby competitions. This year Baku team successfully participated in tournament, held in the Georgian city of Poti, and won the Cup.

G.Valiyev also noted that this sport is very popular among young people and expressed hope for continued success of our athletes. The head coach of national team Vagif Sadathan and mentor of “Jalilabad” team Tofiq Makhmudov noticed that youth shows interest in rugby not only in the capital, but also in regions, and expressed the hope that our athletes will perform successfully in the coming year.
